Morning after the terrible night before

I think Amorim may have just put himself back in the firing line. If the Glazers are looking at the temptations of the Champions League money tantalisingly just above us and expected us to win to get us in there, they will be fuming after that mess. The lovely dividends to fund the lavish life style may not be achieved and I wonder if they will be questioning the managers ability this morning to deliver on their desire. No new yacht courtesy of the Old Trafford faithful. I suspect they will ask whether this season can be successful with RA or whether a change is needed to get us there. Yes Ineos and co make the decision or do they, they are not the owners. What happens if the Glazers insist on change?

Even Amorims supporters in the football side must question last night. What was he thinking, after showing improvement it looked like he thought this is my way, so regardless of the opposition being statistically the worst or one of, I am going to play 343. Honestly it looked like the players were not bought in. Dorgu had good game previously, must have confidence, so switches him, Zirkzee on right side, really? Let’s play pass ball across three players at the back and bore Wolves into submission. The managers decision let Wolves settle into the game. After I believe him admitting he hadn’t got the players to play 343 why go back to it? A lot of questions but Amorim is accountable for last night, he took the wind out of our sails, him. Yes the players didn’t show urgency but it looked like they clearly did not want to change back to this football. I want to see what Amorim did at Lisbon, but that rubbish last night does not help his cause one bit.

I want to say I am behind Amorim however, last night was negative, careful, boring almost cowardly in set up, he will struggle to stay if he continues to serve this up. Yes patience but going backwards as he did last night is not good. Leeds bear pit next, lose there and they will be baying for it, is going to cause Amorim major issues.

31 Dec 2025 08:57:58
It was pretty obvious we went to 3-4-3 to match Wolves who also play that system.

Amorim could win the next 6 games in a row and still have an awful record and be deserving of the sack.

Said it a while back but this is purely political with berrada and wilcox who went for Amorim after Sir Jim was not impressed with Ashworths managerial suggestions to succeed ETH. Admitting they got it wrong will inevitably put their jobs on the line as well.

31 Dec 2025 09:07:05
I’m struggling. I like Amorim but he’s not good enough. We played at home against the worst EPL team in history with 5 at the back.

His decisions make zero sense and he’s underperforming more than the players.

It makes no sense to fire him now, let’s get through Jan, see who we bring and reassess at the end of the season.

This season looks like write off.

I am all for tactical tweaks, but seriously we change to match the system of Wolves, bottom of the table with 2 points, one of worst teams ever, at home?
This is Manchester United at home, where we should be aggressive on the front foot, pressing, getting crosses in to a 6ft 5in CF (who showed promise last night) . Passing aimlessly across the back doesn’t do it for me at home. We are not playing Real Madrid. Ok away at a powerful team maybe play what is effectively 5 at the back, but at home to Wolves? Shocking quite honestly. No width, no getting behind a full back, slow ponderous, yes we need a midfield, two top ones, but serving that up is unacceptable and Amorim needs to be told that. Last chance for Amorim I think, they won’t stand for that much longer whilst our whole football image slips away.

31 Dec 2025 10:52:50
Progress in football is rarely linear; it comes in waves. Last night wasn’t a great match the team looked off from the start and spent the whole time playing catch-up. Despite all the money spent and fewer matches, squad depth looks an issue after a few injuries and AFCON call-ups.

Just remember back to the 89/90 season Fergie was under huge pressure. Fans were chanting for him to be sacked, huge money had been spent, and progress seemed minimal. Yet the board backed him because they could see the work being done behind the scenes. Most of us don’t know the ins and outs of what goes on at United; you have to hope Wilcox and Barrera know what they are doing.

Patience is the rarest commodity in football but it can pay off if you back the right people and give them time to build.

31 Dec 2025 11:21:41
He's made a rod for his own back by insisiting on his system, his recent comments just reinforce that. His last conference seems to say 'I don't care that we won with a different system, I will be reverting to the system that hasn't been working. '

We are poor but are almost challenging for an ECL place. This league is either very poor or very competitive (I think poor), so it is achievable, but every time we get close we have another shocker.

I know he has many fans on here but I continue to think he is out of his depth.

I wouldn't say I was a fan of Amorim but I am patient and am not calling for the sack. I just think he has to see the obvious or the patience of the Glazers will run out whether SJR agrees or not. He didn’t see the obvious last night.

31 Dec 2025 12:22:08
If someone offered United to be 2 points off the top 4 heading into the second half of the season you would all have taken it. You can add as much noise and opinion and formation based arguments as you like, but it really is that simple.

31 Dec 2025 13:06:27
Utd Road,

You might want to check the table if you think the season is a write off. Heard some nonsense on here in my time but that’s up there. We are level with 5th which is likely to get a CL place which is the most we could have expected this year, most though Europa league which we are well in line for. How in is the season a write off? Unless you thought we were going to win the league?

31 Dec 2025 13:54:41
Jd123

Yes, but alternately if we had beaten 10 man Everton, Wolves etc where would we be. Remember what drives the club, money and the riches of Champions League football and the owners will look at last night and be very frustrated indeed.

31 Dec 2025 15:17:16
Red, I agree we should have won those games, but unfortunately we didn't. My point is that we tend to magnify the down times and forget to remember what has and is going well.

We also need to remember we aren't the only team in the league and we don't have divine right to win.

Using the same logic what about Chelsea drawing to B'mouth twice in a month and losing to Leeds 3-1 after beating Barcelona 3-0.

Liverpool have had a similar run of ups and downs. Both teams are above us in the league.

We aren't alone in the turbulence but again, we don't have a divine right to win in the here and now and we have to trust the process and the shockers (which I completely agree with you on! ) along the way.

01 Jan 2026 10:46:38
Jd

I was the first on here 15 years ago to say we don’t have a devine right to win. Not least when Moyes arrived. We don’t.
I like Amorim, he definitely is changing the culture so am with him. If he sets the team up right and we don’t win, so be it. We did not deserve to lose at Villa, were far the better team, he set us up right. By the way the eulogies to Uni Emery were totally misplaced.

However, the set up at home against Wolves was frankly unacceptable as a United manager.

Would be great if you don't do one of these for matchday 19, thank you??.

We had a lot of players missing which will have had an impact. But even so, it was a tough watch.

It seemed pragmatism reigned when he played 442 against Newcastle, yet last night we went back to his preferred 3 at the back.

Dorgu was awesome against Newcastle but was moved back to where he has been struggling. Given the shortage of options, that seemed very odd.

Zirkzee was awful against Newcastle but was picked to start, he was awful again.

Surely 442 would have been better given who was available - Cunha as a 10 playing off Sesko. Dorgu on the right where he looked good.

The lack of urgency and energy is my biggest issue, slow ponderous play, let's have some fight and desire.

The missing players will be used as the reason, but RA doesn't help himself sometimes.

We've drawn with a team that before tonight had 2 points. We've lost at home to a team that had 10 men for over 80 minutes, and we've shipped more goals than all bar 6 teams. Yet we won at Anfield and caused Villa a lot of problems. Make it make sense!

31 Dec 2025 11:05:00
Before the hyperbole starts this is a Wolves team that made it difficult for both Arsenal and Liverpool during the last few weeks.

That said, if you don’t give 100% in a game then in the PL now you will get punished, that is what happened last night.

Yes our form is inconsistent, generally better against the bigger teams, worse against the teams that we should pick up points against, but we are far from the finished article.

Midfield is that major issue we need to spend big on in the summer. It needs a clear out, I’m guessing Cas and Ugarte will be moved on and two new players will be brought in, that should bring more stability.

31 Dec 2025 00:23:20
There's a lot of fickle fans on here. one quick scan after the game and we are back to Amorim not being the man for the job. It's ok to not use the emotion of the last game to decide whether the manager is or isn't the right one.

There is a much bigger picture in play. We currently have half of the first team squad unavailable. We had/have a rotten core in the playing squad which is largely being repaired. It has been states on multiple occasions that we are in a process and shouldn't expect an overnight fix. We don't have a central midfield currently - that will be rectified in the next two transfer windows ready for next season.

If I was offered joint 5th at the half way point of the season I would have taken it.

Tonight's result and performance were really not good, but we've got the take the rough with the smooth. In my opinion we are making progress and there are major changes underway.

My point here is that we all need to stop using the latest emotion of the last result to decide our feeling on the team, and more importantly the manager.

31 Dec 2025 06:49:14
No doubt in my mind the manager and the team above him are the right choices and in it for the longer haul.

The team however is who should be held accountable to what is served up. For years we have been weak and that showed again last night.
Players being out of position did not help, but they should still turn up and we shouldn't need to go 4 at the back against Wolves, not ever.

31 Dec 2025 08:43:29
He absolutely is not the man for the job. I wish he was but this is not the guy. I don't see enough improvement from when he started. He over complicates the game so much that it takes away from players performance. He will require a starting 11 of superstars to play the way he wants. I know we are missing players but my opinion is not based off the wolves result, because the main reason he is not our guy is because what I am watching on the pitch is nothing like watching Man Utd.

It's risk averse, slow play no attacking wingers, and last centre forwards. I am not in favour of always changing managers but this is not our guy.

31 Dec 2025 09:16:17
Amorim hasn’t shown anything over the last 12 months to say he’s the best person for the job.

- Worst EPL finish
- Lost Europa (changed selection, lost game) .
- Worse Utd Manager statistically for around 40 years.
- Signings, non doing as well at Utd vs previous club.
- Sold Players now performing well.

Older fans know say this Dave Sexton era management.

But we can’t fire him.
It will affect January and Summer business.
No obvious options to replace him.
Elite Managers want change at Summer not mid season.
Post World Cup, Tuchel, Poch, Ancelloti, Nagglesman could be options.

Time to emotionally disengage is better advice.

31 Dec 2025 10:47:15
JD I hear what you are saying and you are right to some degree. It's the big picture, we need to keep looking at that.
But he isn't helping himself with performances and set ups like that.

We were truly awful. I've always defended him but last night was a bit of a turning point for me, there are no excuses for that.
Hope it's a kick up the arse for all involved.

31 Dec 2025 11:43:31
I do agree with some of the points above. A case of rock and a hard place. There's the old logic that the table doesn't lie. Besides Villa I don't think any of us would have argued that the teams above us would deserve to be come the end of the season.

It is very much one step forward and one step back but I do personally believe we are on the right path with Amorim.

Sir Matt was still the manager when I first started, followed by Wilf McGuinness. Where have the years gone?!

31 Dec 2025 08:13:15
It was Besty, Charlton and Law for me AJH but boy these guys had something too.
Our club sadly, is a fallen giant of an angel and needs to return upwards again to the heavens.
I hope its going to be in my lifetime.

31 Dec 2025 09:20:54
Fergie 94/95 for me.
Still remember walking over the bridge and see a very different but still spectacular.

31 Dec 2025 10:54:52
Big Ron 85 team for me. 1st game I remember watching 6 years old, big Norms winner against Everton. What a goal!

Hughes, Whiteside, Mcgrath, Olson, Bailey and my boyhood hero and greatest captain ever Bryan Robson.

31 Dec 2025 11:16:43
1977 aged 6 for me, i was brought up watching Fulham with my family at the Cottage when Bestie was playing for them. We moved to N Ireland in '77 so I kept the Best connection going in a country where most people supported united or Liverpool at the time.

30 Dec 2025 22:23:21
That result and performance just typifies 2025 for this club and manager. Others still defend him and that’s their right, I just don’t see it. Back 4 worked the other night yet back to the 3/5 tonight. Anyways that game leaves a bad taste in the mouth but hope springs external for 2026 ?

Happy new year to all on the site, I hope 2026 is a healthy and happy one for all ???.

30 Dec 2025 22:43:55
He used the game as a practise for his precious formation.

30 Dec 2025 22:54:01
Look at the team that finished the game, what do you expect? We play your precious 4 at the back 2nd half and we looked clueless, because the players are kids and nowhere near ready. Amorim has made a few mistakes but I’ve no idea what you expect him to do. Look at the players missing, any team would struggle with them out and the team that finished the game would get relegated, but who else can he play?

We need players back quickly.

30 Dec 2025 23:05:40
Nailed it GDS2.

30 Dec 2025 23:20:54
Even with players back without better midfield we will struggle.

30 Dec 2025 23:22:12
That’s your opinion gds and I respect that. I just don’t share your opinion. Happy new year to you anyways ?.

30 Dec 2025 23:27:20
Tim,

Happy new year to you too. Do you think the kids that finished the game are ready then? What would you have done differently tonight?

30 Dec 2025 23:43:41
Probably not but I would have liked to see him start with the 4 from the first whistle. Your right That the performance and result tonight has caveats due to the missing players, however we witnessed the exact same against westham, Everton etc when we had a near full compliment.

It’s not like it’s a one off is my point. Add to the fact that wolves have been terrible all season only adds to the disappointment.

31 Dec 2025 00:00:55
Gds, 2025

13 wins
11 draws
14 losses

Are we blaming the kids then?

Tonight was disastrous, no excuses, not good enough.

31 Dec 2025 00:22:26
Sorry GDS but i completly disagree.

Sesko 75mil
Ugarte 40mil
Dorgu 30mil
Cunha (who did nothing except fall over) 60mil.

That's only a few names there but there is enough quality in your squad to win that game or at least put in a performance at old trafford. Some of the lads who have left united recently have shown they are good players.

Surely there can be no excusing Amorim for this result. That was an absymal performance and he should have serious questions to answer.

31 Dec 2025 08:08:49
I think your point was finished when your 2nd player was Ugarte who wouldn’t get a game for my Sunday team. But what else can he do? Who would you have played that’s better than the options? Our first 2 choice centre halves, first 3 choice attacking mids and first 3 choice right sided players are all missing. Ok there are good players on the pitch but you need 11 for a football match and there are weaknesses all over the pitch.

I think there has been improvement in recent weeks but last night was disappointing. No need for knee jerk reactions though, we are all so up and down. This season was always going to be a rollercoaster but we are in a much better position than last season and I expect the 2nd half of the season to be even better.

31 Dec 2025 08:09:47
In one GDS2.

30 Dec 2025 20:06:27
Did INEOS not post 55 billion profits for the year, he owns 60%.

30 Dec 2025 11:04:04
Will this impact the club?

bm magazine Article - Ratcliffe battles to keep Ineos afloat as £18bn debt draws in vulture funds

30 Dec 2025 12:09:51
No, the club ownership is ring fenced from ineos other operations so in worst case scenario, the bondholders have no claim to the club or its assets.

Only thing that would impact the club is that Sir Jim might be less inclined to inject more of his own cash into the club but not sure how much he planned on doing that anyway.

30 Dec 2025 18:53:25
Dsg, has sir Jim ever used any of his own funds?
